Bowling alley bar top....without the bowling balls please...

Our old bar was a 2 tier bar. It worked for quite a few years, but the more grandchildren we got, the less useful it was.  It was hard to eat on one level and have the food on another.  We found a piece of  bowling alley on Craig's List.  It sat for many years in the garage waiting for us to get the nerve up to actually do something with it. Once we decided that now was the time, it still  took quite a few saw blades to cut the piece to the right length and to angle the ends.  When it came time to get it in the house it was very heavy and quite flimsy, with the brace boards off.
We still have some finishing to do, but we are very happy that we finally did it.  Another project almost off the list and just in time for Christmas and all the grandkids.

And the really nice thing is that my old bar stools are wood and all we have to do is cut a couple inches off each leg and they are reusable.
Finished with 9 coats of tung oil for a gorgeous water resistant finish.

The skinny's are coming.....

The skinny's.  Perfect for kid's room, bathroom, perfect for DVD storage and so much more.  Varying heights but all 5" deep.  They are a true "recycled" made by hand in Holland product.  All used lumber...nothing new here.  They will be on their way to Not So SHabby very shortly.  The benches are great entryway seating...both 36" long and 18 1/2" tall...recycled, sturdy, and primitive. All these skinny's have sold but there are new ones in the booth at Not So Shabby in Holland.  I still have the primitive benches.

Silently the maple sap runs......

Gathering the buckets of sap.....
It's getting towards the end of the season......

...not quite as many buckets as earlier.

The guys are a little bummed...they want a "Gator" (so sad).

Picking up some firewood on the way to the wood shed.

Step two boiling the sap down on the evaporator....

.....the evaporator (believe it or not) they think it could be used for a washing machine in the off season.

...the final fire.....making syrup.

...and more buckets await.

...and we have enjoyed just a few of the delicious bene's so far...candied nuts, maple sugar cookies and  french toast and syrup...next weekend we are trying Pork Loin w/ you guessed it..maple syrup.

Saturday......and warm too!

Saturdays around our house are always busy, busy.  And since this was our very first really nice one...a lot is going on.  I unpacked the trailer, cleaned it out, and aired everything out.  The guys were busy gathering more maple sap, boiling it down and on top of that cutting up some more firewood.  Before you know it it's after noon and everyone is hungry.  Searching the frig I had ham lunch meat, cheese, some leftover BLT dip from Country Home Creations, and of course crescent rolls.  Put it all together and it was ready in less than 15 minutes, hit the hungry spot and we were all back to work.  The dip gave them that little bit of zing......yummy for the tummy's.

Two slices of ham, small piece of cheese, (I had colby), and a small tsp of BLT on each one, and roll them up.  Quick and easy!!
